My monthly creative newsletter just went out to my subscribers. Since August is a big month for traveling, the article is all about how I pack my travel journal supplies for my trip and has tips on preparing your journal ahead of time. If you aren't a subscriber, you can read the archived issue here.
The big news? Sakura has generously offered a prize package to my readers! It's a Koi® Water Color Field Sketch Box Kit! This is a fantastic prize. I use my kit whenever I travel and I also use it at home. In fact, I used it for the painting I'm working on above. If you want to win the Water Color kit, just leave a comment on this post and I'll pick a name on August 5. Good luck and happy travels!
(Did I mention that Sakura is also sponsoring a prize drawing for the Multiple Streams of Income Online Course participants? That prize will only be available to the smarties who are enrolled in the course. To learn more about the online course, go to my website at www.katydid-designs.com)

ooooo! love love the travel tips today, and i'd love to win the set! thanks a million!
What a timely post! I'm packing next week for my summer vacation - a road trip to Northern British Columbia. There is no WAY I'd travel through mountains like those without my watercolours!
I'd SO love to win this set!
this was a great article! thanks for the tips - i travel often and am certainly one of those people who struggle to fit their clothes on with all the art supplies!
This is timely for me also - I'm packing today for a 2-week trip. My essentials: current journal, scissors, glue stick, permanent pens (black Sharpies in a variety of sizes and Staedtler Lumocolor set), pencils, ballpoints - all packed in their own tote. And the charger for the super-slim digital camera I always have in my everyday bag. And I'm good.
Thanks for the giveaway!
What a great idea! I am planning my getaway to Idaho and Wyoming in September. I have a lot of journalling planned, in between my classwork, of course, as I am taking your Multiple Streams of Income Online Class.
I love to take a journal with me when I travel. I like the ideas of preparing the journal ahead of time. It will help me get even more excited to go, as if I could get any more excited.
Thanks for the packing tips!
Trip? No vacations for us this summer. Husband's work schedule. But, I'd love to win a set. And why did you post below a pic of a cute deer? I can't resist. I just bought a photo from fosterbk.etsy.com. I'm gunna click it...
Thanks for the tips... I keep meaning to try the salt crystals thing.
I'm also one to pack more art supplies and books than clothes. But I think it's fun to look for new art supplies while traveling too, especially in foreign countries. I've found some of the most random and awesome things that complete my travel journals in ways I never would have expected.
Thanks for the sakura drawing!
This was great! And I have had my eye on a travel kit! So cool - thanks.
Cheryl
I love your travel tips, I always tend to over pack when I go somewhere.

Thanks for all the ideas. They are wonderful and I can't wait until my next trip.
Oh what a great idea, and thank you Sakura! I am just recently getting into more of the painting and pastel side of crafting and it calls me LOL
I think it knows my name! :)
Thanks for the chance
thanks for the travel tips ... and thanks to sakura too! please enter me in the drawing. :-)

Great newsletter & post. I would love to win this kit to take on my weekly walk. Thanks for the opportunity.
Travel can be in space, in time or in the imagination. I honor those of us who won't be travelling away from our homes this year due to our personal economy, our health or our responsibilities.
Still doesn't mean that art can't happen right here, right now. As I look around me, I find inspiration in the every day.
Wow what a cool thing to win!!! thanks for a chance and your blog is beautiful!!
Lovely blog ! No real vacations for us this year ! Would love to watercolor.
Thanks for the chance at a great prize ! Thanks to Sakura too!
My husband travels all over Asia and wants me to meet him there with our 10 year old son. While I love to travel, a 12+ hour plane ride with a child prone to air sickness does not thrill me. Having a prepared travel journal with some fun new art supplies is just the thing I need to get me and my son through it! That and some Dramamine. Thank you so much for your inspiring ezine, it has rekindled the waning creative spark.
Always full of great information.
Glad you are there for us startup people.
Great tips on journaling while traveling! I'll be all set... especially if I'm the lucky winner of the Sakura kit! I'll be checking them out in my local Dick Blick....
This was a wonderfully motivating post, Laura. I am all fired up to begin a journal and use it each time I go on a trip. Even on a one day vacation or a walk around my yard. I haven't been creating regularly (and therefore not feeling as happy as I could be.) Now because of what I just read on your site, I'm ready to begin.
Thank you so much for the nudge :)
Ethel
How wonderful and just in time for summer travels.
So cool! I love to sketch rather than take photos while I travel.
Will begging help? I am just learning to use watercolors and would so love a chance to use some Sakura ones!

Love love love this water color journal idea. We leave for a 23 hour trip to California in two days, and am now excited about using this new idea. With three toddlers, this will be a nice break for me after they hit the hay. Been jounaling since I was 10 a great lesson learned from my mom, when my mom died I was able to get her years of journals, and they are a treasured possession of mine, I am sure yours will be as well. Thank you for this opportunity!
Blessings,
Amy:)
Great tips! I always tend to over pack and the Sakura watercolors sound like the ideal solution.
Thanks for sharing your great ideas and tips with the world, it's marvellous! Love the sound of these peel off stickes! Louise. :)
Good ideas there. I like the notion of doing a wash on your sketchbook pages, might try that myself!
Aw man, I always start art journals and then stop! but i promise i will get one to take for my next trip (hopefully to the dominican republic to visit my father)!
Thank you so much for the tips! I actually bought some supplies to make my first journal, binding and all, from beginning to end. I'm so excited! I was at a loss on what to bring with me that wouldn't take up alot of space, but now I know! My next trip will be a road trip with my husband, hopefully a trip up the east coast!
Yes it is true...art supplies always must travel, and I love trying new supplies.
I am off this weekend to spend a week with a friend who is having surgery...so my art supplies will definitely be in my suitcase.
Love your blog and I am signed up for your class, and I'm excited to learn!
I always make sure to bring some creative supplies when traveling. Flying gives me anxiety and I've noticed sketching in my book helps me stay focused on something other than the plane crashing lol.
No vacations right now as maternity leave used up all my time, butwonderful ideas! I would love to win the water color set.
Great post on traveling with art supplies! I have an art case that works to move around my home/garden, but it's too big for a trip...would love to start a smaller version with the sakura pens - thanks for the giveaway chance!
Thanks for the chance to win this wonderful set. I think that I'd have to plan a trip just to use this on the road.
I loved this post! Ironically I just arrived at my home base after a month long huge adventure through Argentina and Chile. I wish I had read this before! I was at a loss as to how to prep or pack. Super helpful and inspiring!
I have traveled so much, but have always struggled to make art on the go - these tips are fantastic (and, naturally, that watercolor kit would be a great help!). Thank you so much.
What a great list of tips! I, too, have found that if I put limits on myself sometimes, I do discover new ways of working with the colors or materials I have at hand.
I'll have to start incorporating more of the receipts, etc - that would be fun.
Would love to win the watercolor set - I'm still using my kids leftover crayola one, since I don't use watercolors as often as other media.
But even if I don't, I've enjoyed your suggestions and will check out Sakura products.
I've been meaning to give watercolors another try for years. No time like the present!
As usual, excellent ideas. I am usually overpacking for my trips too and am nervous about my plan to go to Germany next year. Not because of the packing actually but because of the purchasing of art materials, they have such great quality things there. Thanks for all your advise, Renata
I want to expand my horizons into watercolor! Thanks!
your tips on travel packs was a boost for me! I have done so in the past and this past year.... lagged. I am NOW inspired again! My next Michaels coupon will go towards new blank watercolor journals to have on hand for just this reason!
Thanks, love your ideas and newsletter! http://yonoscreations.blogspot.com
I think I have every color of Jelly Roll pen they've made :D
I definitely over-packed the art supplies when I went on vacation, and I'm sure that it won't be the last time!
Love the ideas...I'll be trying the sea salt one right away!
I loved the idea of painting over an outline sticker and removing it to reveal a silhouette. So pretty! So clever!
Thank you so much for the tips! I'm just starting to make/keep an art journal, and these ideas were inspiring and reassuring!
Ohhh, what a great giveaway! I loved your email about packing for traveling too. This fall we are embarking on a year-long road trip and I really appreciate ideas about packing lightly. Do you have any links for journals? I have such a hard time finding ones with thick enough pages to take ink.
Great News letter today! Look forward to seeing your results too.
My family got to go to Hilton Head for vacation. A trip put o hold till we hear my one son would not need some brain surgory this summer for Epilepsy.
So I was doubley pleased to go and actually make a sketch journal and memory book. We worked on it when we waited for our food. Cutting and pasting at the dinner table! We used a tour book as our base. Stop by my blog to see some of it if you like.
i too LOVE LOVE Pigma and the lines from sakura.
Hubby just mentioned he like to take a 4 day weekend before school starts so I am getting a few travel things together again!
Thanks for all ya do!

Sakura is my FAVORITE brand of pens/markers. They are so fun and have such a variety. I love taking projects on trips to record how your feeling and things your enjoying that you forget overtime if you don't "get it down" on paper in the moment!
Planning a trip to Boston in October. This would be a great travel companion
uh...love it!!!
Very cool! I love the painting that you have shown here!
So glad I signed up for the newsletter. I really enjoyed the tip. I was fortunate enough to by a great sketch pad and would love to win this set. my daughter would love this - she's a design student!
